The G7's quantum statement is about cryptography, not cryptocurrency
Seven G7 national cyber security agencies, together with the EU Commission, published a joint statement on migrating to post-quantum cryptography. The text is about public key cryptography; cryptocurrencies are relevant not because they are named in it but because they rest on the same mathematics. We set out the difference and why it matters.

"Quantum computers...pose risks to cyber security with their ability to break public key cryptography (PKC)."
Note what the sentence names: public key cryptography. Not cryptocurrency.
Two different things, one shared word
In everyday use "crypto" covers two different subjects: cryptography, the science of encryption, and cryptocurrency. This statement is about the first.
The two do genuinely intersect here: signatures on Bitcoin and Ethereum rest on public key cryptography. So the statement does not address cryptocurrencies, yet it describes a problem that covers them.
Drawing that line matters, because "the G7 warned crypto" invents an addressee the text does not have.
Harvest now, decrypt later
The attack pattern the statement defines explains why this is a present problem:
"A scenario, where adversaries store encrypted data for decryption once a cryptographically relevant quantum computer emerges."
Breaking encrypted data today is not required; storing it is enough. When a capable quantum computer arrives, what was collected in the past becomes readable.
That is the part which retires the answer "quantum is still far off": encrypted data captured today can be read with tomorrow's tool.
The timetable: the 2030s
The statement gives a window for the migration:
"Migration is expected to be completed in the private sector during the 2030s (specific dates will vary slightly by country)."
In the text's own framing one advantage of this migration is its relatively long implementation timeframe. This is a planned move, not an emergency alarm.
What it means for chains
The statement issues no instruction to blockchains, and neither does this piece. The factual statement available is this: the signature schemes on widely used chains are public key cryptography, and therefore within the scope of the same migration.
Which network moves when, and how, is a decision made per network. No network's roadmap was examined for this piece.
Risks
Biggest uncertainty The exact publication date of the statement and the per-country timetables were not verified here.
- The word "crypto" carries two meanings. The statement addresses every institution using cryptography; the cryptocurrency sector is not treated separately in it.
