Mainnet vs testnet: what is the difference?
Mainnet is the production network where transactions carry real value. A testnet is a separate network for testing applications and contracts.
In brief
Mainnet is the production network where transactions carry real economic value. A testnet is a separate network for testing contracts and applications without risking real funds.
Why are balances different?
Each network maintains its own state. Ethereum documentation states that Mainnet balances and transaction history do not carry over to testnets. Test ETH is commonly obtained from faucets and is not designed to carry real value.
Is a testnet NFT a mainnet NFT?
No. The testnet record belongs to a separate contract and ledger. Do not assume migration unless the project publishes a remint, migration or entitlement process.
Risks
Biggest uncertainty A testnet asset is not a mainnet asset without an explicit migration or entitlement process.
Check the network name and chain ID. Open the contract in the correct block explorer. Do not mistake a test token for the production asset. Ethereum also advises against reusing Mainnet accounts on testnets.
Conclusion
Mainnet and testnet are separate ledgers. Matching addresses do not combine their balances, transactions or assets.
