What is a crypto wallet and how does it work

A crypto wallet is an app or device that lets you view a blockchain account and sign transactions. Your assets are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the wallet. Your address can be shared; your private key and recovery phrase must remain secret.

In brief

A crypto wallet is an app or device that helps you access a account. It can show balances, send assets, connect to apps and sign transactions.

Coins do not sit inside your phone or wallet app. Ownership is recorded on the blockchain. The wallet manages the keys that let you act on that record.

Is a wallet address the same as a private key

No.

  • A wallet address can be shared when you want to receive assets.
  • A private key signs transactions and must stay secret.
  • A recovery phrase can restore accounts in many wallets. Do not screenshot it or enter it on a website.

Hot wallet versus hardware wallet

A hot wallet runs on a phone, computer or browser. It is convenient for regular use but depends on the security of an internet-connected device.

A hardware wallet keeps the signing key on a separate device. It can add protection for assets used less often, but safe operation still depends on the user.

How to use a crypto wallet

  1. Download the wallet from a trusted source.
  2. Create a new account or restore an existing one.
  3. Store the offline in a safe place.
  4. Check the network and address before receiving funds.
  5. Read the amount, network and permissions before approving a transaction.

Common mistakes

Using the wrong network, installing a fake wallet and sharing a recovery phrase are common errors. Stop if someone claiming to be support asks for your recovery phrase. A legitimate support process does not need it.

Connecting a wallet to a site is not automatically a transfer. A message or transaction you sign afterward may grant permissions, so read the wallet's confirmation screen.

This guide did not assess any specific wallet brand or recovery service.
